Artist Presentations:
Students will have the
responsibility of investigating and teaching each other how artists generate
and develop content in their work and then express these ideas visually. Choose
one contemporary sculptor from the list I gave you and organize a 10-15 minute
presentation. While you may include quotes, do not read from a script! Each presentation should:
1.
Cover the ideas the artist is exploring in his or her work. How are
these ideas expressed
visually through choice of forms, installation, materials etc.?
2.
Describe things that have directly influenced the artist’s work (i.e. artist’s biography, work of
other artists, literature, music, current events, religion, ANYTHING
relevant and influential to the artist’s work). Do not include any biographical
information that cannot be clearly tied to the artist’s work.
3.
Carefully select images of at least 5 examples of the artist’s work (consider supplementing
images with detail shots where needed). For each image, describe the following: materials
and process describe
the different visual elements of the piece how
specific elements in the sculpture relate to the content
If
an artist has a wide range of work, you could choose to either:
a.
focus in depth on a certain body of work
b.
choose an array of work that represents the variety of sculptures or the progression
of work over time.
In
either case, be sure to describe in detail the sculptures you choose to include
in your presentation.
4.
PLEASE HAND IN A BIBLIOGRAPHY of
resources used to research your artist.
Don’t worry about the proper bibliography format – just make sure you give me necessary information to
look up your resources i.e. web address; book name,
author and publisher; magazine title, date, author and pages.
Please be mindful of the
time recommendation and rehearse the timing of your presentation before class.
This is an assignment you should start researching ahead of time. Do not wait until the day or
week before your presentation to start researching. If you have trouble finding
information on your artist, I can help you as long as it is well in advance of
your presentation date.
Some examples of great
resources are:
-
the Visual Arts Library has current and back issues of periodicals such as Sculpture, Art in
America, and Art News. You can look up periodical indexes online
-on
the BU online library resource, ArtStor has high quality free images available to
BU students. It also has selected articles available. If the article isn’t
available online, you can find the
hard copy in the main library.
